Radiant Hall now operates over 115 studios (50,000sf) in three locations. While our mission is rooted in ensuring space for artists to create, we also believe that building a community centered around providing equitable opportunities for artists to develop, share, and grow their practice or creative business is just as essential.
Now in our 12th operating year, Radiant Hall has achieved a number of key milestones, and taken on exciting new projects to better serve the local arts community.
In 2020, we opened our newest studio location in McKees Rocks. The 22,000 sq ft facility offered the potential to nearly double the amount of studio space we provide. We also established the Knotzland Residency—led by Homewood-based artist and entrepreneur Nisha Blackwell--designed to support BIPOC and other marginalized creatives. In response to COVID-19, we engaged over 300 volunteers in a collaborative mask-making effort, and launched Pop-Up Markets, which have since featured over 300 local artists and small businesses as vendors.
In 2021, we undertook a successful planned leadership transition and welcomed Marina Balko as the new Executive Director. Balko has a background in arts leadership both locally and nationally. We were also recognized as a vital resource for the local creative community by the Allegheny Regional Asset District, joining the ranks of libraries, public parks, and cultural institutions designated as RAD Assets.
In 2022, we reached a major benchmark of 270 artists and creatives hosted in our studio spaces. We also launched our first open call in collaboration with BOOM Concepts for BOOM Universe @ Radiant Hall, a residency program dedicated to the advancement of Black/Brown, Femme, and Queer artists and creative entrepreneurs.
In 2022 and 2023 staff and board worked to develop a new 3 year strategic plan. Radiant Hall's new mission statement was developed as part of this process in which we also revisited our vision and values, mapped out three-year strategic priorities, and developed a long-term financial model.
In 2024, we brought on a new Communication and Events Manager, Tye Clarke, and also hired Vicki Branagan as Radiant Hall’s first ever Facilities Manager, a shared position with Sweetwater Center for the Arts, supported by the Allegheny Regional Asset District (RAD) Connection Grant program. In addition to welcoming our new staff members, we created a new position, elevating Nisha Blackwell to the role of Residency Director.
Radiant Hall has been W.A.G.E. certified since 2021. W.A.G.E. is a national program that publicly recognizes nonprofit arts organizations demonstrating a history of, and ongoing commitment to, fair compensation for freelance artists. In 2023, we also joined 15 other local arts organizations in publicly committing to wage minimums through a statement of Pay Standards by The Visual Arts Coalition for Equity (VACE) and have since become a member of the coalition. As an artist founded and led organization, our commitment to fair compensation extends to our staff as well, all of whom have experience as arts practitioners, and most maintain an active art practice.
