OUR STUDIOS

Radiant Hall’s primary focus rests on providing affordable space for artists and creatives to build community and grow their practices. The open studio model used in all Radiant Hall studio locations is designed to encourage our members to actively engage with one-another through artistic collaboration, shared knowledge, and resources. Members who fully engage with their studios will not only benefit from secure, energized working environments, but will also be provided with opportunities to develop and improve their professional practices.

Accessibility

Physical Access
Physical accessibility varies by studio location. Details for each location are provided below. For artists with a mobility disability, please consider our Homewood location, which offers greater accessibility features.

Air Quality
Our studios are shared working spaces and we cannot guarantee the environment to be completely free of odors or sawdust. However, we do not permit the use of aerosols, toxic or high-odor materials inside any of our buildings.

Service animals are welcome at all of our locations.

Additional accommodations are available upon request. Please let us know how we can help you fully participate in our programs!

LAWRENCEVILLE

Physical Access
To enter Lawrenceville studios, visitors must walk up two steps. Studios are located on several floors and accessible only by stairs. This building does not have an elevator.

Restroom Access
A gender-neutral restroom is located on the second floor and on the basement level. The restrooms are not ADA accessible.

Parking and Transit
Our Lawrenceville studios are located on the corner of Plummer Street and Cotton Way. Public parking is available on the street, with no reserved parking.

Port Authority bus routes 91 and 93 have stops along Butler Street within 4 blocks of our building (about a 2 minute walk).

HOMEWOOD

Physical Access
A wheelchair accessible entrance is located off of the parking lot on the east side of the building. Studios are located on the second floor of a multi-tenant building in suites 202 and 207. The studios, pathways and common spaces are all wheelchair accessible. The building has one accessible passenger elevator and two freight elevators.

Restroom Access
There are multi-stall, single-sex restrooms located on each floor of the building. The restrooms are designated as wheelchair accessible. We are excited to announce that as of February 2023, the building owners have installed push button motorized doors on the 1st floor restrooms! It should be noted that the 2nd floor restroom doors, however, still lack full maneuvering clearance, and assistance may be needed to exit.

Parking and Transit
Our Homewood studios are located on Susquehanna Street between Brushton Avenue and Rosedale Street. A parking lot is located on the east side of the building. The lot has five designated spots for visitors with a valid handicapped parking permit located on the left of the ramp entrance to the building.

Port Authority bus routes 71D and 86 have stops along Wood Street within 3 blocks (about a 7 minute walk). Routes 69, 71, 79, P1, P2, P3 have stops along the East Busway within 4 blocks of our building (about a 7 minute walk).

MCKEES ROCKS

Physical Access
To enter McKees Rocks studios, visitors must walk up one step to access the ground floor, where all of the studios are currently located. The building’s interior floors have different elevations, with inclined transitions to raised sections that have an uneven lip, which may make it difficult for visitors utilizing walkers or wheelchairs.

Restroom Access
A gender-neutral restroom is located on the ground floor. This restroom is not ADA accessible.

Parking and Transit
Our McKees Rocks studios are located on Thompson Avenue between Yunker Street and Chartiers Avenue. Public parking is available on the street, with no reserved parking.

Port Authority bus routes 24 and 20 have stops along Chartiers Avenue within 3 blocks of our building (about a 3 minute walk), and route 21 with stops along Island Avenue within 4 blocks (about a 4 minute walk).

If you have questions about accessibility for any of our studios, please contact us.

PRICING

All studios at Radiant Hall are subsidized. In our model, artists pay no more than half of what it costs us to provide the space. The following are typical rates available to individual artists, with a 6-month commitment (first and last month dues required upon signing). Month-to-month contracts and non-subsidized studio sponsorships are available at higher rates.

  • HALF STUDIOS (90-110 sqft) $175/month

  • FULL STUDIOS (180-220 sqft) $275/month

  • DOUBLE STUDIOS (360-440 sqft) $500/month

  • TEMPORARY PROJECT SPACE (sizes and space allocation vary) $250 - $775/month

Some studios with special amenities (additional square footage, private studios with locking doors, etc.) are available at higher rates.

FIND YOUR SPACE

If you’re interested in studio membership at Radiant Hall, please read through the following information and fill out the inquiry form below.

ABOUT THE PROCESS

When we have a vacancy, priority is given first to artists in our Residency Programs, then to current Studio Members, and finally to our Inquiry Waitlist.

Please know that our locations are often at capacity. If you are interested in space, we strongly encourage you to fill out the inquiry form so you may be placed on our waitlist. Also, note that studios with natural light, larger studios, and private studios are all in high demand. Only request private studio space or natural light on the inquiry form if these are deal breakers.

Studio Memberships are granted at the discretion of the Studio Directors based on the selection criteria below. When there is availability that meets your request, you may be contacted for a site visit. If you are invited for a site visit, this is not a guarantee that you will be offered a studio space. We generally tour several prospective members when a space becomes available.

SELECTION CRITERIA

We do not jury artworks as part of the selection process. As we strive for a diverse and inclusive community, consideration is always given to the make up of our current community, and how we can better represent a range of artistic/creative practices, backgrounds, and perspectives.

Some things we consider when matching prospective members to available space (these criteria are not ranked):

  • Does the artist/creative have an active practice or a demonstrated interest in growing their practice?

  • When was the date of inquiry? How long have they been on the waitlist?

  • Does the prospective member help further Radiant Hall's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion goals (BIPOC, artists/creatives with disabilities, and other marginalized groups)?

  • Does the prospective member have a home zip code in the area or strong connection to neighborhood?

  • Would this artist/creative expand the diversity of practices currently represented in the studio location?

  • Does their desired move in date align with the availability of the studio?

  • Is there a strong urgency/need for space?

  • Does the prospective member have a history as an active & considerate community member? Have they participated in Radiant Hall programming in the past? Do they otherwise demonstrate community-mindedness?

  • Does the vacant studio adequately accommodate the prospective member’s space requirements?

PRACTICES, EQUIPMENT, & MATERIALS USAGE

You do not have to consider yourself an “Artist” to be a studio member. Radiant Hall holds a broad definition of the term, but we understand everyone holds their own. We welcome a people with a wide range of creative practices including but not limited to writers, sewists, designers, architects, and entrepreneurs.

Does that mean you can do *anything* in our studios? Unfortunately no. The reality is that our spaces are better suited to accommodate some practices over others. For example, if you use equipment that has special electrical requirements or the materials use your warrant direct ventilation, we may not have a space that can meet those needs. Inversely, many of our studios are part of an open layout and we cannot guarantee the environment to be completely free of odors or dust. If you use any materials that involve flame, heat, fumes or particles, please let us know in your inquiry and we’ll let you know what we can accommodate.

Should you still apply even thought your practice is not clean and quiet? Yes! Artists can be messy. And, who knows, even if we can’t accommodate your practice now, we are always working on ways to grow and evolve Radiant Hall in response to demand.

RESIDENCIES

Our residency opportunities are designed to create a welcoming pathway to participation in Radiant Hall’s studio community. We understand that having a designated studio space is a significant investment for many artists, and the cost may be a barrier for some. We also feel that underwriting this cost is one way we can help combat the historically oppressive and exclusionary practices of the Pittsburgh cultural sector.

Residencies are offered in partnership with BOOM Concepts, Knotzland, and ORIGINS, and with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Arts, Equity, & Education Fund, The Pittsburgh Foundation, The Heinz Endowments, Neighborhood Allies, and the Eberly Foundation.

ELIGIBILITY

Radiant Hall Residencies prioritize artists with practices or identities which have historically been marginalized by the cultural sector, or underrepresented in our studios (including BIPOC, Queer, Disabled, Low Income, Students/Recent Grads, and more). Some residency opportunities may have additional criteria based on partner or funder priorities, which are outlined in open calls. At this point, our residency programs focus on local artists; non-local artists are welcome to apply, but please note that we do not offer a housing component.

BENEFITS

Residency participants receive fully subsidized studio space for 3 months to 1 year, with no specific output or public component requirements! Participants also receive a $500 one-time stipend, individualized support from Radiant Hall staff and partners, and waitlist priority for available studios after the residency term ends.

SELECTION PROCESS

We accept general residency applications on a rolling basis, and award residencies as space and funding is available. We also issue open calls periodically for residencies offered in partnership with other organizations, or with more specific eligibility requirements. On average, 10 residencies (4 short-term, 6 long-term) are awarded per year.
